The 1915 Panama-California Exposition held in Balboa Park introduced Spanish Colonial Revival architecture to Southern California and to millions of visitors. The California Building and its tower, the Spreckels Organ Pavilion and the “temporary” buildings along El Prado have stirred the souls of San Diegans for over 90 years. During the 1960s two wonderful buildings on the Plaza de Panama were demolished and other buildings on El Prado were destined to meet the same fate. A group of determined people stepped up and brought a halt to the destruction. Since its formation in 1967, The Balboa Park Committee of 100 has been a strong advocate for these buildings. |

Russ Low
May 29, 2026
Discovery of his own roots began 30 years ago through the stories of Russ Low's family. Growing up in Central California, his connection to Chinese culture and history was limited and incomplete. Discovering the 1903 Hong family photograph among the belongings of 100-year-old great Uncle Kim sparked a search for the stories behind the photograph. In his searches, Russell came across a 130-year-old newspaper notice titled "Villainous-looking Chinese after a Chinese Girl." He recognized his great-grandparents' names, but the romantic drama it uncovered shook the core of his family's belief in who they are and how they came to be Americans. |
